Hip Hop 5K San Diego, CA 2018 Kickin with Producers

San Diego, CA - We had a blast at the 3rd Annual Hip Hop 5K in San Diego,CA held at ECC organized by Diamond Minds and Futuristic Music Group with our associate Carleton Overstreet Jr., Entertainment Director at the event. We helped with stage managing the event and entertainers. The day started early of course 7:00 a.m. with a successful run, walk that was well participated in. The staging area was surrounded with full group of vendors that stayed to the end. Entertainment ran from 8:00 a.m. - 3:00 P.M. pst. It was a long day in the sun and I probably got several shades darker and should have worn more sunscreen. All those years street performing pay off at these events.

We had a parade of local and national entertainers throughout the day but what was impressive from an entrepreneurial and mentorship perspective is that the event featured music producers that were there to speak meet and greet the next generation of talent. Many music events are just that events or shows, but this added element of mentorship really added an "uplifting" element to the event.

Mistah F.A.B.  is a multi-platinum songwriter and record producer, who has collaborated with major acts such as Snoop Dogg, Too $hort, E-40, B.o.B, Chris Brown, and Eric Bellinger. (according to Wikipedia)

ABC Duets Debuts Strong...

ABC has decided to throw its hat in the ring finally in the singing show genre. Well timed, highly promoted, and a good start.

What makes this show interesting is that the judges are also competing. So they have to choose teams of people that will be singing with them. YEAH!

As I watch the show the theory actually works. You have fairly seasoned performers, writers, producers working with up and coming performers. There is a certain level of exsisting profesionlism like THE VOICE and the development of American Idol and THE VOICE without watching the train wrecks of the early American Idols.

Highlights of the show...

1. Robbie Williams cover of LET ME ENTERTAIN YOU to open the show....NICE

Jennifer Nettles Riffing on that as well. When she turns it on its kind a scary cool.

2. Robin Thicke being Robin Thicke lol. Seriously! But the moment when he made a really smart decision to not sing with a guy who jumps the beat when Robin naturally sings after the beat. Little things like that are the things that make this show different. 

3. Singing with the FAN/ Stalker / Twin. Kelly's pick is Cool. It really shows how much she has influenced a generation of singers / performers and in a good way.

I am going to stop there so you can let me know what you thought? It's a solid show that should easily pick up THE VOICE & American Idol Fans in the counter season.

Robin you are one talented funny ^&^#YUH% Your Mom's quote cracked me up. You working with people form the piano like John Legend is cool man. 

John Legend, you are such a talented song writer with a unique voice. I almost think of you as a hidden secret that everyone KNOWS ABOUT. YOU ROCK!

Kelly Clarkson, you are super sweet, super nice. A real person who is super talented and continues to inspire a real generation of people to really sing.

NBC Co-Star of Chuck Hosts Comedy Extravaganzas

San Diego, CA - Lamb’s Players Theatre, in conjunction with Prayer Dudz, presents Mark Christopher Lawrence of NBC’s hit series Chuck in a two-night comedy extravaganza, “Big Mike vs The Con” at the Horton Grand Theater on July 21 and 22. Mark is joined on Thursday night for a family-oriented “clean comedy” show with comics Jimmy Burns, Lester Barrie, and Scott Wood and guest musician K.C. Murdock. Friday night’s show is an edgier, more adult-oriented evening with Chuck co-star Scott Krinsky and comics Chris Clobber and Vicki Barbolak and musical guest Josh Damigo. The two nights are a counterpoint to the wildly successful Comic-Con which runs Thursday through Sunday.

Thursday, July 21
Mark Christopher Lawrence is joined onstage by Jimmy Burns, known as "The Teacher Comedian," “Mister Punchline” Scott Wood, and Gospel comedian Lester Barrie. Jimmy Burns has toured with George Lopez, Arsenio Hall, Brad Garrett, and the late Richard Jeni. Jimmy has also co-hosted "Live from Here with James P. Connolly" on the National Lampoon Comedy Radio Network. Scott Wood has performed at such venues as The Ice House, The Comedy Store, and The Laugh Factory, and was named Stand Up Comedy Champion at the Improv Comedy Club in 2010. Lester Barrie has been the opening act for Ray Charles and been a co-headliner with Mike Epps, Jonnie Witherspoon, and Bruce Bruce. Musical guest K.C. Murdock opens the night with his mix of classic and alternative rock and blues.

Friday, July 22
Mark and his co-star from Chuck, Scott Krinsky, are joined by talented comics Chris Clobber and Vicki Barbolack for a night of edgy and adult-oriented humor. Besides his role as Jeff Barnes on Chuck, Scott Krinsky regularly performs at the Comedy Store and Improv in Los Angeles. Chris Clobber is the co-producer of BrewHaHa comedy and has written for major Las Vegas and Hollywood performers. Named Nikelodeon’s “America’s Funniest Mom” and “California’s Funniest Female,” Vicki Barbolak has worked with the likes of Pauley Shore, Rhonda Shear, and Roseanne Barr during her years on stage.. Friday’s musical guest Josh Damigo was the 2010 winner in the San Diego Music Awards “Best Acoustic” category and the 2009 “Best Local Recording Artist.”

Hulu + MTV = Vevo.com ROCK ON!

I keep hearing, "What the hell happened to MTV?"

They used to actually show videos.

Then came Hulu.com while other companies were trying to figure out how to make money doing it. Hulu.com just did it and grabbed market share and did it well setting the bar extremely high.  Just visit the main networks video players and the interface is still not as consistent as Hulu's. 

Then along came Vevo.com from Youtube & UMG according to a press release 

VEVO announces agreement with EMI Music

Vevo is a music video premium site that has agreements with..

• EMI's Labels
• Astralwerks
• Blue Note
• Capitol
• Virgin

Members of VEVO are creating player lists that they can share with other members.

Vevo has a way of giving musical artists and labels a bit more control over the brand and connection with the audience in social media way. Similar to the Hulu site by raising the bar to high quality programing and controlling content they are once again able to control a branding element. 

YouTube will be paid for its technology and also will receive a small percentage of Vevo's ad revenue.

The numbers of impressions are important but so is the quality of the experience. So go check it out and let me know how it made you feel?

Billy Johnson Jr. covers the Kanye West Freaky Moment...

New York,NY- Kanye West apparently walked up onstage during Taylor Swift's acceptance speech for  Best Female Video for "You Belong With Me." The first for  19-year-old country starlet, who has become a smash in the pop world basically revitalizing the teen country category. 

Kanye West Has Truly Lost It This Time

Just so you know, Everyone Booed Kanye and gave Taylor Swift a standing ovation. So it's not like we don't know that Kanye lost it publicly. I just think it's terrible that Taylor Swift's moment as an accomplished teen-age performer is now a bit weird. But hey that is the music industry.

The weird thing is that I seem to remember the "George Bush doesn't care about black people." moment and if you really watch it he is having a truly emotional moment that led him to an outburst.

But this time he wasn't even presenting he literally took the mike away from a 19-year old kid. Watch the footage and your heart just breaks when he starts his tirade and Beyonce is just aghast at the whole event.

Beyonce later brought back Taylor Swift to finish her acceptance speech and props to Beyonce for doing a gracious and honorable thing.

about 40th Anniversary of Woodstock

San Diego, CA - Sha Na Na's Jocko Marcellino joins David Kamatoy live on UStream.tv and DavidKamatoy.com on Wednesday, August 12th, at 9:00 a.m. PST to talk about the festivities surrounding the Woodstock 40th Anniversary. Sha Na Na performed at Woodstock at about sunrise on the last day of the festival, just before the late Jimi Hendrix. As a founding member of Sha Na Na, Jocko Marcellino has the distinction of performing in the most successful music documentary ever, Woodstock.

Woodstock became a launching point for the group, as Sha Na Na was the only group at the festival without a record deal. They received one immediately afterward, and today the group has released more than 25 albums, with worldwide sales of more than 20 million. The group also performed in the movie musical Grease, and had their own television show from 1977 to 1981.

This week Jocko has been attending events, screenings, and reunions based on the 40th Anniversary of the Woodstock Festival. Jocko has agreed to share with David Kamatoy's audience some stories both past and present from the original Woodstock and the attention that he is getting wrapped around the 40th Anniversary. "We did 40 minutes and were paid $300,” Marcellino once recalled about the original Woodstock, “and the check bounced!"

"I want to catch up with Jocko. His story is unique in that they were a 50's tribute band that ended up with a very successful television show. Ultimately creating a strong brand with staying power."  David Kamatoy comments.

Greg Campbell plays at Upstart Crow in Seaport Village.

San Diego, CA- Greg Campbell is playing and singing at Upstart Crow. An acoustic guitar eclectic driven set of standards and covers.

Greg and I spent several years together working at Lambs Players Theatre where he was the lead sound engineer responsible for making the band and several of us sound good.

Its great to see him in another element.. You can see him occasionaly here at Upstart Crow a book store and coffee shop iin Seaport Village.

I was competing a show when I realized that Greg and Susan Campbell were standing there. He told me he was playing here so I decided to hang out for a while.

There is rumor some actual recordings coming soon. Well keep you updated.
