We're back and here is the new video podcast. We shortened the format and went with an actual shot of San Diego vs. the Virtual Set we had before... I LIKE IT.

In his first story, David Kamatoy discusses the amazing popularity of the iPad, with more sold in the holiday quarter than many pundits had predicted for the entire year. David Kamatoy’s second major topic is the interview he conducted with SBA loan broker Craig G. Francis which reviewed 2010, covering several areas of interest to small business owners and looking ahead into 2011. “If you’re very serious about being a business person in 2011, you want to read the report,” says Kamatoy. Craig G. Francis presents some sobering facts about the current economic situation and what entrepreneurs need to consider as they move forward in 2011.

The final major topic of the episode is the Sundance Film Festival premier of a new movie, “I Melt with You,” starring Thomas Jane, Rob Lowe, Jeremy Piven, and Christian McKay. David relates his involvement in the creation of a “Behind the Scenes” documentary of the movie, which was shot using Canon 5d and 7d cameras.

The episode also features a video starring Mark Christopher Lawrence of NBC’s “Chuck” spoofing the Activia Challenge commercials. Director Mark Pellington gets reckless on his first HD DSLR feature, I Melt with You

For many, HD DSLRs have brought freedom in producing quality, cinematic images without the need for a massive crew or an inflated budget. They have opened a gateway, allowing almost anyone with a vision to enter the production world without compromising quality. Director/producer Mark Pellington already had an impressive track record before he came into contact with the HD DSLR, including The Mothman Prophecies(2002) and Arlington Road (1999). He also had a slew of award-winning music videos for bands like Pearl Jam, Alice In Chains, Nine Inch Nails and, of course, U2. What Pellington didn’t have was access to a technology that offered the speed and agility required for his style of production, which he de-scribes as both “reckless” and “chaotic.”

Trudy: Wow what's the point of rigging it up so it ways a ton like traditional film cameras? They need to invent a better dolly too for this type of camera. LOL. -Jan 24, 2011

As the article states there are times when the camera was just literally a camera and a lens. Generally speaking the importance of using a CINE rig with a 1st ac 2nd ac x 2 cameras has to do with production values.

Since it's a feature film that's going to be Blown up the importance of having the shot done properly is essential. That means the shot is in focus, the scene is covered properly, you get all the dialogue .

This rigging and team effort also bodes to FATIGUE. It's one thing to go in for a day and shoot handheld and get something that  works. It's another thing to go in and shoot for 30 days consistently.

I shot BTS Behind The Scenes on this project mostly HH Hand Holding a 7D for several days right next to these guys and I was shooting say 20% of what they where shooting and it was exhausting. -David Kamatoy

The answer is ultimately you are both right. You could make a few more films for a million and YES the production values would be different. Besides a Rob Lowe or Jeremy Piven you also would not have all the crew experience etc.

Yes they do have other options to DOLLY but ultimately the other DOLLY  is trying to emulate the Dolly you see here in Matt Roe's BTS shot.

Mark Pellington and Eric Schmidt DP ultimately used the palate of both a traditional and non-traditional DSLR techniques on this film to do ultimately what all of strive to do...

I Melt with You the movie will premiere at the Sundance Film Festival on January 26, 2011. 

Congrats to the gang at POV Films.

I Melt with You is Directed by Mark Pellington, DP Eric Schmidt, Written by Glenn Porter & Mark Pellington. CAST Includes Thomas Jane, Jeremy Piven, Robe Lowe & Christian McKay. 

I got several emails from DP Eric Schmidt this week while they were in telecine. Can't wait to see the cut. 

I am currently working on some Behind The Scenes Footage to be used at a talk that Mark Pellington Director, DP Eric Schmidt, Associat Producer Matt Roe will be doing regarding shooting a feature on the Canon 5dMII and 7D.

Very exctiting. We're in the process of getting approval for images that can be released onto the blogs. Even though I shot the footage I have to work through the chain of command. lol.

I was an early adaptor of HULU and actually got quite a bit of traffic for the first 6 months because I covered it on the blog. 

The challenge of TV on the net as Jeff Gaspin said "Pennies vs. Dollars" but it was clear that someone had to make the move and HULU was the chosen site to grab the initial traffic. 

It seems like this move is the one that moves in the direction of dollars vs. pennies. 

My only regrest is that were not in a position to advertise on Hulu when it was up and coming. Oh well.

On the set of "I Melt with you" The Movie

Monterey, CA- I spent this week shooting BTS Behind The Scenes footage for the independent feature "I Melt with You", a low budget independant feature directed by Mark Pellington, written by Glenn Porter.

This preview was shot on a 7D with a Lens Baby by Matt Roe to help get the ball rolling.

 

There are several factors that make this project extremely unique.

1. The cast is made up of several notable TV and Film Stars including Rob Lowe, Jeremy Piven, Christian McKay and Thomas Jane.

These gentlemen made a decision to do a relationship based independant low budget feature strongly because of the script and Mark Pellington the director.

2. The show is being shot on HDSLR's specifically Canon's 5DMII and the 7D along with a few GoPros.

My job was to cover this unique process that is embracing the new world of being able to shoot fast and light using HDSLR's and how it effects the entire workflow of the set.

I just finished shooting days of footage and my job in the next week is to figure out what I have. Decide with the producers and Thomas Jane what we can and can't release currently.

Once I review the footage I will be catching up with the Cast and Crew in LA to cover the last days of principal photography.

There so many thoughts and angles on this thing. I just sort of want to post this as a warning...lol.

In this new generation of HDSLR's we have seen some amazing things coming from the prosumer community. So what happens when the people that grew up in the industry also embrace the new technology...

Review:Land of the Lost- Imagine falling into one of your favorite television shows as a kid but now your an adult.

I enjoyed this film I think because after watching the previews I knew what I was getting into. Once I was there it was clear.

This answers the question that seemed to be on the mind of every reviewer.

WHO IS LAND OF THE LOST FOR?

Answer: Those of us who grew up on Kroft Family Shows.

Rated pg-13 I think the answer is still not so clear. If you grew up on t Kroft Family Shows you start to realize that these brothers produced so much of the kid and family entertainment of the 70's and 80's hr pufnstuff, Kroft Puppets, Family Affair, Donnie and Marie Show, Dean Martin Show to name a few.

Deciding to take a break from my late night insanity to see if I can drop into an early showing of Land of the Lost. Early meaning 12:01a.m. The theatre was filled with a spattering of people that genuinely seemed entertained by the movie.

Anna Friel: Very enjoyable to watch even though I have read about her work in "Pushing Daisies" not being familiar with her actually help ground the comedy and help sell the reality of the surreal plot.

Will Ferrell: Odd and brilliant as always Will is definitely the go to guy on these odd exceptional everyman type roles. The thing that he does well in this piece is play adverse relationships in a comical way. He creates a comic tension that makes us expect a gag, a laugh and that's what makes it work.

Danny McBride: Was lucky enough to be brought in on Tropic Thunder which was truly one of the funniest movies I've seen in a long time. He apparently riffed a lot in this film and while many of the riffs did not make it in. The attitude did.

Director Brad Siberling: Nice work reigning in this rag tag group of actors. There were several comic bits one specifically that I was amazed that you guys made that work...

Let's just say that I didn't expect to be walking out of Land of the Lost singing, "A Chorus Line" again a great era reference to the same group of us that watched Land of the Lost. lol. 

Avy Kaufman: Just wanted to give you a nod. I like the way you cast things notably Lions for Lambs which went a bit unnoticed sadly it was a powerful piece. While Land of the Lost is not Lions for Lambs casting was still the same brilliant.

Effects were a nice upgrade while still keeping some of that old camp in the deal. Congrats to the effects and prod design crew. It's fun to see the tech work in the context of a comedy. You forget that it exists which is your job, but I sat through the credits past the Dino egg gag and wow, it was a long list.

Some Favorite Comic Moments for me...

Bug Gag: Yeah we saw it in the preview but there is some subtly to this black comedy moment. Notably the blood draining from Wills body. Nice!

Chorus Line: It becomes almost an uncomfortable running gag. Especially with the musical theatre gay reference until the pay off.

Matt Lauer: Payoff Gag.

Hey enjoy the movie. See it with other people that will get the references that's probably your best bet. Not the one to take the younger girl your dating because of your mid-life crisis. =P

I love how in depth the franchise is getting now with the Television Series, films and now the pre-quels. It allows us to see farther into the Science-Fiction Genre rather than just a lot of cool special effects. Science-Fiction ultimately reminds of where we are by showing us what the future could hold.

With the time travel theme of the Terminator Series it's a little more up front. lol. However now that were getting a lexicon of information the future lesson seems more tangible.

I have recently been watching the Numbers past seasons myself. I look forward to more current movies being streamed. Right now new releases take a while to get to STREAM mode. The next shift will be to see more and more current releases going to stream right away.

I don't see an issue with this as it's traceable...

Watching, "Dragon Wars" on Netflix

Roswell and Jason Behr fans rejoice as Hyung-rae Shim's Dragon Wars is available on Netflix via streaming. Shawn Rover was in from Japan recently and he and were working at the office as I pulled up a movie via Netflix he was intrigued.

I am streaming and watching Dragon Wars as I blog and write and I love the quality from the house. Seriously it's awesome. I am bummed that my streaming is not a better quality at the office. Regardless I am geeking out while watching Dragon Wars and I highly recommend Netflix.

The future of entertainment is here it's just a question of time as our watching habits switch more to ON DEMAND.
