Kumar N. Patel in the last four decades invented the carbon dioxide laser. which revolutionized the manufacturing and surgical procedures. In his new venture he originally intended to create a laser that would detect disease but with funding issues it turned into a laser that would help detect explosives..
The next variation was a bit more Stealthy a laser that would blind the guidance system of an antiaircraft missle. Yeah THAT'S COOL.
So the two thing that inspire eme here are simply.
1. A midlife crisis at 60. So now I have an excuse.
2. Flexibility in the marketplace- To quote from the article...
"One thing I learned is that a small company has to be very agile with respect to market opportunities," said Patel, now 70. "You can't create new science all of a sudden, but you can fill in the gaps in terms of where the needs are."
I have met many an entrepreneur that became so focused on the original goal that they couldnt see the opportunities or the shifts that they should make in order to be successful. Some entrepreneurs come with inflexible traits and stay on the wrong course for way too long.
