San Diego, CA- From the moment I saw the preview this went on my HAVE TO SEE IT List. Galaxy Quest to Star Trek as Superman to My Super Ex-GirlFriend. A great comedy or drama takes real world situations that we can identify with and places them in extraordinary situations that we can only imagine dealing with.
In Fox’s “24” Jack Bauer’s ex-girlfriend ends up being a terrorist that kills his wife. In this movie the ex-girlfriend is a maniacal jealous girlfriend that just happens to have superpowers. I think we can all identify with either being or being involved in a jealous crazy relationship. Except in this situation it’s entertaining.
“ I swear to keep your secret or I’ll shove a Chainsaw up my ass.” – Luke Wilson, Matt Saunders My Super Ex-GirlFriend
I recommend this film especially if you’re into the genre or if you just saw Superman, either way it works. I think the comedic effectiveness of this film became clear when in the theatre that was not that full as most people are seeing pirates right now, the laughter was exuberant. (I admit that most of the people in the theatre most likely went to the San Diego Comic Con.)
Great Casting and directing and I love the way the men had a distinctly feminine metro sexual characteristics. If you took the supporting male cast of Eddie Izzard ( Proffesor Bedlam AKA Barry) and Rainn Wilson ( Vaughn Haige) they could pass for two gay men. (Ok maybe I shouldn’t have used the word love.)
Uma Thurman was perfectly missing something in her characterization of Jenny/ G-Girl, Luke Wilson (Matt Saunders) the manliest of men in the film was engaging and funny. The warmest performance came from Anna Farris (Hannah Lewis) the other love interest of Matt Saunders, who was able to create a great relationship onscreen with Luke Wilson.
Finally Ivan Reitman Rocks. You completely understand the comfort of dealing with such an absurd concept seriously yet with irreverence when you realize this was the guy that directed GhostBusters. IT ALLL MAKES SENSE NOW! I CAN GO ON LIVING! SEE IT AND ENJOY!
